Established 1896 as Barclay & Co Ltd through merger of 20 mostly private banks led by Barclay, Bevan, Tritton, Ransom, Bouverie & Co of London, Jonathan Backhouse & Co of Darlington and Gurneys, Birkbecks, Barclay & Buxton of Norwich. Subsequently acquired numerous private and joint stock banks, especially United Counties Bank Ltd in 1916 and London Provincial & South Western Bank Ltd in 1918. From 1917 known as Barclays Bank Ltd. From 1911 developed important overseas banking interests, largely through acquisitions, and integrated them as Barclays Bank (Dominion Colonial & Overseas) in 1925; this became Barclays Bank International in 1971. 1969 acquired Martins Bank. Developed investment banking activities from 1976 and these were known as Barclays de Zoete Wedd in the 1980s. 1985 international activities merged with domestic banking. 2000 acquired Woolwich Plc, formerly Woolwich Building Society.
