Notes:

Established in 1918-19 as a manufacturer of a very wide range of electrical equipment including generators, transformers and electric motors and also tramcar equipment. Later made railway locomotives, aircraft and computers. 1918-19 formed through acquisition of, inter alia, Dick Kerr & Co Ltd, Willans & Robinson Ltd of Rugby, and Phoenix Dynamo Manufacturing Co Ltd of Bradford as well as some assets of Siemens Brothers Ltd, notably Siemens Bros Dynamo Works at Stratford. Subsequently acquired other important businesses such as Marconi in 1946 and D Napier & Son Ltd, aero engine manufacturers, in 1942. Built up aircraft interests between 1939-45, establishing English Electric Aviation Ltd in 1958 which built military aircraft. Established a computer business with J Lyons & Co Ltd in 1963. Aircraft interests merged in 1960 to form British Aircraft Corp Ltd. 1968 acquired by GEC Ltd
