Notes:
An account of the Courtauld family from the 16th century, written by Sir Stephen Courtauld and privately circulated. Volume One deals with the Courtauld family in France in the 16th and 17th centuries and with their work in London in the 18th century as gold and silversmiths and as silk producers - in particular Augustin Courtauld, 1685-1751; his brother, Peter, c1690-1729; and Augustin's son, Samuel, c1720-65. Volume 2 deals with the four visits by George Courtauld, 1761-1823, to North America between 1785 and 1823; he was the first Courtauld to set up in the silk production industry as a throwster but had limited success. Volume Three deals with the establishment by George's son, Samuel, 1793-1881, of a successful silk production business at Bocking and Halstead in Essex. The volumes are essentially about the history of the family, drawing extensively on family papers, but also link it to the gold and silversmith and silk businesses
