Introductory chapters covers industrial and commercial history: 'Industry' [pp27-32] including: textiles and clothing, sugar, beers and spirits, chemicals, metal, tobacco; 'Commerce' [pp32-6] covering shops and markets, 'offices', public houses and restaurants; and 'Playhouses, theatres and music halls' [pp36-7].
