Based on Hugh Alley, 'A Caveatt for the Citty of London or a forewarninge of offences against penall lawes', 1598, an illustrated manuscript relating to the City of London's food markets - of which 13 are illustrated - with some text outlining his concerns at abuses in the market system. As well as commentary on the document there are essays - 'The London food markets' and 'Hugh Alley, law enforcement, and market regulation in the later sixteenth century'. The document is reproduced as a facsimile
