Draws on the writer's doctoral thesis 'Lead Production on the Northeast Periphery. A study of the Bowes family estate, c1550-1771', Durham University, 2010. Considers the Bowes family's role as 'gentry entrepreneurs' in the early economic expansion of the north east region through their lead extraction activities in Weardale and Teesdale, within the lands of the Bishopric of Durham, shedding much light on the latter. Has sections: 'Lead mining and the Crown'; 'The Bowes family lead interests'; 'The Bowes family and lead mining over the seventeenth century'; 'Repeal of the Mines Royal'.
