Deals with Gibside house and estate which was inherited by Sir George Bowes, 1701-60, in c1722. It became his principle residence. It had passed into the Bowes family following the marriage of his father, Sir William Bowes, to Elizabeth Blakiston in 1693. It was managed alongside the Bowes family's existing estate at Streatlam. On his death passed to Earls of Strathmore and went into decline. Written by an architectural historian and focuses on the house. Draws on her doctoral dissertation, 'Gibside.
