Scholarly account dealing with the project in the early 1860s to build Shambellie House, a gentleman's house at Dumfries, for the Stewart family [William Stewart], local businessmen and landowners; the background to the project; how the house was used; the relationship between owner, architect and builder; the issues that developed between the parties involved and the resulting legal action.
