Biography written shortly after his death by his son. Deals with his boyhood, education, work at the Bar, work as a judge, his connections with science, his private and social life and his wartime work in the administration of munitions production. The latter is dealt with in some detail in chapters 'The fight for Amatol' [pp175-222] and 'Reaping the harvest' [pp223-73] - explosives production, factory construction, department administration, Halckite Scandal. His post war work in the reshaping and management of the dyestuffs industry is hardly touched on
