Based on accounts of the Keswick copper mines and smelting works of the Society of Mines Royal which had recently been discovered in the archives of the Society's biggest shareholder, David Haug, Hans Langnauer & Co, at Augsburg. These archives include memoranda about the Society and accounts about the mines. The volume comprises two parts: 1] an introduction to the archives, explaining their nature and content, and 2] extracts from the journals, 1569-77, with a commentary by the author, providing a detailed account of performance, activities, working, etc, of the mines and the Society
