Notes:

Although its purpose is to explore the interplay between the development of the tourism and the preservation of the Lake District in the interwar years, part of it charts the development of the tourist industry characterised by middle class visitors staying for long periods in hotels and boarding houses 'noting the overall continuities whilst examining the changes effected by the progress of motor-borne transport and the growth of the outdoor movement. It also scutinises the fortunes of the main resorts of Windermere, Keswick, Grasmere and Ambleside, detailing their continued reliance on their natural attractions and the strategies adopted to secure and extend these'.
