Notes:

Official history commissioned from the Professor of Economic History at Hong Kong University. Deals with the bank's role, 1895-1918: 'as the most powerful financial corporation in the East, [it] played a key role as financier of and adviser to governments and as a promoter of such operations as the British & Chinese Corp. By 1911, the bank had become the headquarters of a consortium, the 'China Consortium', of national banking groups which effectively dominated the finance of China's economic development from the last years of the Ch'ing dynasty through the founding of the Chinese Republic. In these years, the Hongkong Bank truly lived up to its Chinese name, Wayfoong, the 'focus of wealth'. In three parts, viz: 1] 'The Hongkong Bank as eastern exchange bank, 1902-14'; 2] 'The Hongkong Bank as merchant bank. China, 1895-1914'; 3] 'Epilogue. The bank, Germany and the Great War'. Includes much on British & Chinese Corp Ltd; Pekin Syndicate Ltd; Chinese railways
