Largely comprises transcriptions of letters [756 items] held in the National Archives [CUST58] exchanged between officials in Portsmouth and London [19 Jan 1748 to 22 Sep 1750] about the administration of the Customs Service; with introductory chapters dealing with organisation and work of the Customs Service, commercial and fiscal policy, the nature of the records, etc [ppxi-xxxvii]. The letters relate 'often in full and vivid detail every event out of the ordinary in Customs operations in an out port that the dominating presence of the Navy made far from typical.
