Scholarly commissioned history of the firm from its beginnings mostly to the 1930s although to an extent adopting the form of a biography of the firm's founder, Jesse Boot, d1931. Largely follows a chronological path but with separate chapters on 'Finance', 'Industrial welfare' and 'Liberalism and philanthropy'. The other chapters are: 'Market for medicines'; 'Rise of a self made man'; 'Expansion of the business, 1900-20'; 'Private versus company chemists'; 'The American era, 1920-33'; 'Problems of succession'. Appendices are: 'Statistics of the patent medicine trade in Great Britain, 1850-1914' and 'Financial results of Jesse Boot's companies, 1883-1920'
