(Sir) Charles Raymond, 1713-88, spent his early career as a ship's captain and accumulated considerable wealth from trading. Retired from sea in 1747 to operate as a ship's husband, organising and having an equity interest in ships operated by East India Company; emerged as their most important agent. Also entered private banking and was a founding partner in Raymond, Williams, Vere, Lowe & Fletcher. 1754 acquired the country house, Valentines, Ilford, Greater London [then Essex], and lived there until late 1770s, undertaking much building work. Also owned considerable country estates. Also sometime a 'manager' of Sun Fire Office, a director of South Sea Co and a director of Company of Scotch Mines
