Notes:

First published 1930. Written 'by a layman' for 'the mature student and the general reader'. The writer was sometime head of a technical school. Has 30 chapters on 'basic industries' [mostly coa extraction, iron and steel, shipbuilding]; 'textile industries' [mostly wool and cotton] 'semi basic industries' [mostly chemicals, coal tar]; 'dependent & lesser industries [clothing, food manufacture, printing & publishing]. Very little on engineering. Largely describes the industries as they functioned at the time of publication
