Covers Association for the Fishing and Royal Fishery Co. The former was established by Charles I in 1632. Its activities were focused in the Western Isles, especially Lewis, and it closed in the later 1630s. The latter was established in 1661 by Charles II and closed in the 1670s. Both represented attempts to strengthen the weak British fishing industry in competition with the Dutch fishing industry which was well established and prosperous and which contributed substantially to the wealth of Holland. The British response was to encourage the establishment of chartered companies with monopoly rights. These were unsuccessful.
