Notes:
Draws heavily on a manuscript written by Edward R Fawcett, d1939. His father had been a miner in the Swaledale lead extraction industry and displaced by mine closures. He himself had in 1914-18 formed a partnership with others to work lead mines at Arngill and Ivelet under wartime conditions when the industry briefly revived. Part 1 has sections: 'Historical background'; '18th century developments'; '19th century'; 'Ore dressing'; 'Smelting'; 'Marketing and shipping of lead'. Part 2 has sections: 'Life in the Dales'; 'Bargains'; 'Food'; 'Fuel'; 'Water'; 'Land'; 'Relief'; 'Markets'; 'Fairs'; Superstitions'; 'Sporting'; etc
