Written by a retired career railway administrator at work in the industry from 1946. Deals in detail with the campaign by the railway transport industry from 1921 for 'equality with other transport' namely road passenger, road haulage and coastal shipping, which became known as the 'Square Deal' campaign. It continued into the period of nationalisation. Deals especially with the government attitude to the industry; the legislation which is perceived to have hindered railway activity; the government's response to the campaign. Also covers wartime activity. Based on primary sources. A polemic?
