Mostly contains transcriptions of documents relating to the trade of Bristol with the aims of 1] providing a detailed statistical record of Bristol's trade; 2] to illustrate its organisation; 3] 'to give examples of the types of documents available which may be used for writing the history of any seaport in Great Britain in this century'. Provides short introductory chapter relating to the course and organisation of Bristol's trade. The transcribed documents are in three groups: 1] 'The trades' including documents providing statistics and supporting information [pp1-71]; 2] 'Some Bristol enterprises' including documents which detail the conduct of a merchant's business [pp73-136]; 3] 'Commercial procedures' including documents created by merchants in the course of their business [pp137-76]. There are substantial appendices detailing Bristol shipping and merchant bankruptcies
