Mostly comprises transcriptions of 403 letters written by Thomas Hill, merchant, to his firm's business connections, mostly in London but also in European centres such as Amsterdam, Venice, Livorno, Naples, Lucca, etc, between February 1660 and December 1661. The letters were written in connection with the administration of the estate of his father, Richard Hill, who had recently died, and include much detail about the family's merchanting business, its nature, procedures, network, connections to West Country commerce, etc. Also shed light on the firm's transatlantic connections and touch on Richard Hill's other connections including with Samuel Pepys and the Royal Society. The transcriptions are preceded by a substantial introductory essay [pp xv-lxxxi] about the Hill family, their business and world.
