Notes:

Mostly comprises a transcription of the diary, 1754-65, which takes the form of an almost daily journal of activities. It 'is about those whose livings were much hard won. It chronicles the everyday business of surviving, of getting and spending, of eating and drinking, of work and play, and of life and death, amongst the ordinary people of the mid eighteenth century'. Touches much on his retail business 'to provide a rare first-hand account of a man who supplied virtually every retail item to a small community and also acted as its local expert on money matters'. Includes much on his work as an undertaker
