Notes:

Acknowledges the absence of a much needed scholarly business history of the British film industry and seeks to 'sketch out a framework on which such a history might be based'. In particular seeks 'to explain how both the structure of the industry and the strategies pursued by leading firms evolved through the twentieth century, and to offer some explanation as to why the industry developed in the way it did'. In five chronological sections - 1] infancy; 2] c1910-27 and its functioning under free market conditions; 3] 1927-c60 and impact of government intervention and emergence of a protected domestic industry'; 4] decline in audiences in the latter period; 5] period from c1980 and response to revival in film market and removal of protection
