Deals with the relationship of British owned and managed steamship companies and an indigenous owned and managed rival, when the former invested heavily in profitable local shipping services via China Navigation Co Ltd [Swire] and China Coast Steam Navigation Co Ltd [Jardine Matheson] and competed strongly with the local Shanghai Steam Navigation Co, later renamed China Merchants Steam Navigation Co
