Scholarly and detailed account of the 18th century Weaver Navigation including the process of and opposition to the passing of the 1721 Act authorising navigation improvements; the execution of the act; the relationship of the Commissioners and 'undertakers' [ie managers] in running the navigation and its change over time; later amending legislation; canal competition; etc. Lengthy appendices include transcriptions of key documentation and 'statistics', the latter including Annual revenue from tonnage dues, 1732-1800, and Annual tonnage of goods carried analysed by type, 1759-1800.
