Transcriptions of 269 letters exchanged between men of science in the industrial revolution period, here 1768-1805, giving insights into their relationships, characters, methods, diffusion, etc. Most letters touch on James Watt and Professor Joseph Black, 1728-99, chemist, physician, academic, Watt's friend, etc, but John Robison, 1739-1805, also figures prominently. Much technical material dealing with such subjects as firing of ceramics, manufacture of alkali, invention of scientific instruments, invention of copying press, canal design, steam engines, etc. Wider issues include training of clerks, managers and artisans; dissemination of technical knowledge; diffusion of inventions; patent law and protection; etc. Also includes a transcription of one of Watt's technical notebooks.
