Traced origins to William Moore who established a retail ironmonger's business at Norwich in 1797. William S Boulton joined as partner in 1844. 1864 acquired a foundry and started to manufacture wide variety of articles including wire netting from 1867. 1869 Dawson Paul, formerly works manager, appointed partner and business renamed W S Boulton & Co. Paul sole proprietor from 1879. 1897 incorporated and public company in 1906. By then producing wire products, especially wire netting, wooden products, especially prefabricated buildings, foundry products, structural steelwork and, briefly, motor boats. 1914-18 made aircraft on large scale and continued to do so in peacetime until sold to Boulton & Paul Aircraft Ltd in 1934. Sometime acquired by British Electric Traction Co Ltd (BET) and sold by them to management in 1993
