Traces origins to c1823 when John Sturge, 1799-1840, a dyestuffs maker, relocated his business from Bewdley to central Birminfgham. 1830 known as J & E Sturge when joined by Edmund Sturge. 1833 relocated to Selly Oak, Birmingham. 1844 Arthur Albright joined (until 1855) and soon started to make phosphorous; there was to be an enduring connection with the much larger business of Aldbright & Wilson Ltd and in 1887 acquired by Wilson family. c1898 started to make precipitate calcium carbonate for use in a wide range of goods but then especially in cigarette paper manufacture, at a new site at Lifford Lane, Kings Norton. 1917 [1910?] incorporated as John & E Sturge & Co Ltd [J & E Sturge Ltd?]. 1970s acquired by Boehringer Ingelheim of Germany who sold the business to RTZ in 1983. Subsequently other owners. 1998 Lifford site operation acquired by Speciality Minerals Group of USA. Continues under Speciality Minerals name
