Traces origins to 1850 when Heaton family acquired Soho Mint equipment from Matthew Boulton and started to make tokens and coins for overseas customers, especially colonial governments. Operated as James Heaton & Sons. By 1853 also made coins for Royal Mint and by 1880s also made under contract large numbers of fittings for a broad range of products. 1889 reconstructed as a public company, The Mint Birmingham Ltd. Between wars focused on metal rolling and tube making, returning to coin minting from 1960s. Sometime known as Birmingham Mint Group Plc. 1991 acquired by IMI Plc. 2003 sold to J F T Law & Co when manufacturing stopped. Latterly known as Birmingham Mint Ltd
