(Sir) Basil Zaharoff, 1849-1936, was an international arms dealer from the late 1870s, noted for his unscrupulous practices. In 1877 appointed representative in the Near East of the Swedish armaments business, Thorsten Nordenfeldt. Subsequently acquired a major stake in Hiram Maxim's Maxim Nordenfeldt Guns & Ammunition Co Ltd which in 1897 was acquired by Vickers Ltd with which he was subsequently connected. 1914-18 was close to the British government's war efforts, especially in the Near East. Lived for long in Paris and also had interests, inter alia, in French banking [2023]
