Traced origins to 1872 when established by the Kirk and Valentine familes as a partnership styled Moss Bay Hematite Iron Co. 1881 reconstructed as Moss Bay Hematite Iron & Steel Co Ltd. 1891 reconstructed under the same name and again reconstructed 1909 when renamed Workington Iron & Steel Co Ltd. In particular made iron rails. 1918 merged with, inter alia, Steel Peech & Tozer Ltd, Samuel Fox & Co Ltd and Appleby Frodingham Steel Co Ltd in 1918 to form United Steel Companies Ltd.
