Traced origins to a wholesale druggist business established by Edward Herring and Jacob Hulle, possibly trading as British & Foreign Alkaloid Co, at Southwark, London. Joined by Thomas Whiffen, 1819-1904, in 1854 and owned by him by 1868. By then manufacturing quinine and strychnine. 1887 known as Whiffen & Sons and in 1880s moved to Southall, London. 1912 incorporated as Whiffen & Sons Ltd. 1923 relocated to Fulham. 1947, when a speciality chemicals business, acquired by Fisons Ltd. Name discontinued 1966
