The Wharton family lived at Wharton Hall, near Kirkby Stephen, and by 17th century owned much of Swaledale above Grinton. In 17th century, under 4th Lord Wharton, greatly expanded their lead extraction interests, employing as agents two families with noted expertise in lead extraction, the Swales and the Barkers, notably Philip Swale. Built smelting works and organised an export trade. Sold off and broken up in late 17th century by 6th Lord Wharton
