Notes:
Established c1871 by George and James Weir, trading as G & J Weir. Initially consulting engineers at Liverpool, moving to Glasgow in 1873. Soon moved into manufacturing and specialised boiler feed machinery, notably pumps and valves, focusing in particular on equipment for ships and based at Holm Foundry, Cathcart, from 1886. Incorporated 1895 as G & J Weir Ltd. While foundry work and marine equipment, notably pumps, remained the core business throughout, developed other interests in prefabricated housing production, motor car manufacture via substantial investment in the French motor vehicle production interests of A Darracq, and in the marketing and production under licence, sometime via Mondel Weir Ltd, of Mondel metal for use in production of turbine blades. 1953 converted to a public company. 1958 adopted a holding company structure under G & J Weir Holdings Ltd, later Weir Group. Continues in 2010 as a leading pump and valve manufacturer
