Traced origins to Richard Waygood, 1806-79, who established a general engineering business at Beaminster in 1833, transferring it to London in 1842. Based at Newington Iron Works. Made wide range of machinery including hydraulic lifts from 1868. Known as Richard Waygood & Co from 1872 and came to specialise in lifts, cranes and hoists and became a leader in Britain with overseas branches. c1890s Cliff Lifts Ltd established to build passenger lifts at seaside resorts. 1894 incorporated as R Waygood & Co Ltd. 1897 public company. 1902 merged with Otis Elevator Co Ltd, owned by Otis Elevator Co of USA, to form Waygood & Otis Ltd but separated 1903 until 1914 when remerged as Waygood Otis Ltd. Built escalators from 1920s. 1957 known as Otis Elevators Ltd
