Notes:
The first significant improvements in water supply date from 1694 when Exeter Corporation, identifying a need for improvement, granted a 200 year lease to four entrepreneurs to establish a water engine to pump water from River Exe. This undertaking was managed by James Golsworthy from c1808 who introduced improvements and who from 1822 had a controlling interest in the supply. Following a cholera epidemic in 1832 Golsworthy sold waterworks to newly formed Exeter Water Co in 1833. 1878 assets acquired by Exeter Corporation and managed as Exeter Corporation Water Dept until 1964. Then transferred to East Devon Water Board which became part of South West Water Authority in 1974.
