Notes:
Established 1878 by Thomas W Ward, 1853-1926, as a coal and coke merchant. Quickly expanded into provision of minerals and other raw materials for iron founding industry including iron and steel scrap. Alongside this bought up struggling businesses which were revived and retained. Diversified into dismantling buildings and ships and built shipbreaking yards at Morecambe, Briton Ferry, Swansea, Blyth, Inverkeithing, etc, and scrapyards throughout country. Latterly developed into iron, steel and non ferrous metal refining and processing; fabrication and erection of structural steelwork; distribution and reconditioning of a wide range of machinery; quarrying; cement production via Ketton Portland Cement Co; railway wagon production and repair; contractors plant hire; etc. 1982 acquired by Rio Tinto Zinc (RTZ)
