Notes:

Traced origins to 1839 when Henry W F Bolckow, 1806-78, and John Vaughan, 1799-1868, established Bolckow & Vaughan to build an iron foundry/rolling mill at Middlesbrough. Started iron production 1846 and later acquired ironstone and coal mines. Emerged as a major iron and steel producer. Incorporated 1864. Prospered under its General Manager, Edward Williams, 1826-86, who joined in 1864 and left in 1875. 1899 acquired Clay Lane Iron Co Ltd, owners, inter alia, of South Skelton Ironstone Mine, followed in 1916 by Eston Sheet & Galvanizing Co Ltd, in 1920 by Darlington Rolling Mills Co Ltd and in 1922 by Redpath Brown and Co Ltd, constructional engineers. 1929 amalgamated with Dorman Long & Co Ltd
