Walton family, lead miners

Sectors:

  • Extraction Coal extraction
  • Extraction Iron ore extraction
  • Extraction Lead extraction
  • Extraction Zinc extraction

Notes:

Traced origins in business to Jacob Walton, d1840, who, with Thomas Shaw, leased an existing lead and zinc mine at Alston Moor from 1817 which proved to be very productive. Succeeded by his sons who developed many connections with local lead mining, especially at Alston Moor, but also as far away as Scotland. They were agents, shareholders, leasees, etc, sometime working together and sometime involving others. Developed more modest interests in iron ore and coal mining. By end of 19th century interests were in decline and had more or less ended by 1914. John Walton & Co and Fallowfield Mine were particularly important connections
