Traced origins to 1844 and the establishment of Frith Wallace & Co in London. This acted for the Wallace family's business at Bombay which dated to 1841 and which was to be known as Wallace & Co from 1848. The London business was reorganised in 1862 when Wallace Brothers & Co was formed to act as an agency house. From 1850s started shipping timber from Burma and in 1863 established Bombay Burmah Trading Corp Ltd which came to play a leading role in Burmese trade. From end of 19th century developed numerous other business ventures in Burma, Thailand and South East Asia for which they invariably acted as managers and in which they took equity interests. In decline from 1930s and after 1945 diversified into activities elsewhere; these included commodity trading and shipping. 1978 acquired by Standard Chartered Bank Ltd
