Traced origins to 1900 when established as Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers (1900) Ltd through merger of c26 cement manufacturers and related businesses. Mostly located on Thames and Medway, south east England. Failed in objective of fixing prices although considerable plant closures resulted. 1911 a further attempt at rationalisation and price control resulted in the amalgamation of c33 businesses into British Portland Cement Manufacturers Ltd, a subsidiary of Associated Portland Cement Manufacturers (1900) Ltd. The resulting business now controlled 80% of UK market. Increasingly traded under Blue Circle brand. Business restructured 1956 to effect rationalisation of plant. 1978 renamed Blue Circle Industries Ltd, when largest cement maker in the world, to reflect diversification into new areas. Acquired 2001 by Lafarge of France
