Traced origins to 1851 when James Valentine, 1815-79, established a photography business. Soon pioneered postcard printing and became a leadiing printer of them. Incorporated c1896 as Valentine & Sons Ltd. By 1900 also printing greetings cards, calendars, novelties, etc. By 1950s greeting cards more important than postcards. In 1963 acquired by John Waddington Ltd and in 1980 sold on to Hallmark Cards.
