Traced origins to Turner Brothers Ltd of Rochdale, established in 1871 to manufacture cotton cloth products. 1879 started to make asbestos cloth when known as Turner Brothers Asbestos Ltd. 1920 merged with Washington Chemical Co Ltd of Wearside, J W Roberts Ltd of Armley, Leeds and Newalls Insulation Ltd and in 1925 with Ferodo Ltd of Chapel en le Frith. Public company 1925. Moved head office to Manchester in 1949. Subsequently acquired many other businesses making asbestos products and mining asbestos in Africa to become a leading UK public company. 1998 acquired by Federal Mogul. In administration 2001 largely due to compensation claims from very many employees and others whose health had been destroyed due to asbestos pollutants emitted from the company's works and products over very many years
