In 19th century Whitby business known as Thomas Turnbull & Sons and of substantial local importance. 1872 Reginald M Turnbull and Robert Turnbull Scott, with support of Whitby business, established Turnbull Scott & Co at Gracechurch St, City of London, as ship and insurance brokers. By 1882 managing steamships and subsequently shipowners. 1877 family established Turnbull Brothers at Cardiff as shipbrokers and later ship managers and owners, to export coal and import grain. Gave up shipowning c1980s.
