Blaenavon Iron Works traced its origins to c1789 when operated by Thomas Hill, Benjamin Pratt and Thomas Hopkins. From early times also had coal mining interests. By 1800 was the second largest ironworks in Wales after Cyfarthfa Ironworks. Operated by Blaenavon Coal & Iron Co from 1836 financed by Robert Kennard when significantly expanded. Subsequently underwent a number of reconstructions as Blaenavon Co Ltd (1864), Blaenavon Iron & Steel Co Ltd (1870) when steel production started and Blaenavon Co Ltd (1879). In late 1870s Sidney Gilchrist Thomas at Bleanavon Works perfected his vital process for eliminating phosphorous in steel production. 1880 established major new coal mining shaft known as 'Big Pit'. Iron and steel production dwindled thereafter and given up. Important coal mining interests nationalised in 1947
