Traced origins to 1864 when established by merger of Gutta Percha Co, City Road, London, established 1845, and Glass Elliot & Co, Greenwich, established early 1850s through acquisition of Kuper & Co, wire manufacturers. Both businesses were involved in production and laying of cable for submarine telegraphy. The new business became a leader of the UK industry.
