Traced origins to 1864 when established by merger of Gutta Percha Co, City Road, London, established 1845, and Glass Elliot & Co, Greenwich, established early 1850s through acquisition of Kuper & Co, wire manufacturers. Both businesses were involved in production and laying of cable for submarine telegraphy. The new business became a leader of the UK industry. Subsequently diversified into related areas such as manufacture of power cables, cables for radio and television, and cable laying equipment. Increasing traded under the 'Telecon' name. 1935 as a response to reduced demand, merged submarine cable manufacturing interests with those of Siemens Brothers & Co Ltd to form as a joint venture, Submarine Cables Ltd. 1959 acquired by British Insulated Callender's Cables Ltd [2023]
