Traced origins to George Black who opened his first picture hall, at Sunderland, in 1906. By 1915 owned 12 halls in north east. Circuit sold in 1919. From 1920 started to build a second circuit, trading as Black Brothers, establishing separate company per cinema. 1928 George Black was a founding member of General Theatres Corp Ltd, owners of 56 picture/variety theatres into which he transferred at least some of his cinemas. His remaining cinemas where sold by mid 1950s
