Established 1852 to acquire Sunderland Water Co which had been formed by act of parliament in 1846 and which subsequently had acquired South Shields Water Co, established 1788, and Bishopswearmouth Water Co, est 1824. Developed extensive infrastructure including Ryhope Pumping Station in 1860s. In c1922 joined with newly formed Durham County Water Board to build reservoirs. 1993 as Sunderland & South Shields Water Plc merged with Newcastle & Gateshead Water Plc to form North East Water Plc
