Traced origins to Louis Sterne, 1835-1924, an American, who established a London business in c1865 which was incorporated as Thomson Sterne & Co Ltd in 1874 to manufacture at Crown Iron Works, Glasgow. Early on made spiral springs for railway buffer use and also refrigeration and ice making machinery, gas engines and emery wheels/machines. Reconstructed 1882, when became L Sterne & Co Ltd, and 1909. Focused on refrigeration equipment and in 1933 sold emery wheel business to Universal Grinding Wheel Co Ltd. By 1923 fully owned Blackfriars Cold Storage Co Ltd, London. 1935 acquired Haslam Foundry & Engineering Co Ltd, Derby, in order to develop marine refrigeration interests. Subsequently acquired by Prestcold Ltd. From 1880s Beale family controlled the business and its management
