Planned from 1933 by Birmingham Corporation and opened by it in 1939 when known as Birmingham Municipal Aerodrome. Soon after in military use, transferring back to civil use under government control. From 1960 again operated by Birmingham Corporation who then embarked upon a new building programme. Ownership passed to West Midlands County Council in 1974 and to West Midlands Joint Airport Committee, a consortium of local authorities, in 1986. Transferred to Birmingham International Airport Plc, owned by the authorities, in 1987. 1993 control passed to private institutional investors who undertook to expand airport facilities. Continues
